Objective: The purpose of this study was to analyze the benefit of hearing aids in geriatrics with presbycusis.
Method: Twenty one subjects with mild-to-profound sensorineural hearing loss were monaurally or binaurally fitted with programmable or digital type of hearing aids. The hearing aid benefit was obtained with respect to functional gain, listening ability and hearing handicap.
Results: The average functional gains were 16.58 dB in the hearing sensitivity and 40.76% in the word recognition score respectively. The hearing handicap was decreased by 19.62 points with respect to the Korean hearing handicap index (KHHIE).
Conclusion: Results indicate that geriatrics with hearing loss benefit from hearing aids in terms of hearing handicap as well as hearing ability.
